Perhaps my aromatherapy devotion started with the Warm Vanilla Sugar body spray I kept stashed in my school locker, or maybe it was the Sweet Pea body wash I religiously stocked my college shower with. Who’s to say, really? In any case, this affinity of mine for scents has grown over time into an all-out candle craze. Each season, mood, or occasion rightly calls for its own unique fragrance, leaving every corner of my home redolent of some pleasant perfume. And, in my humble opinion, the best way to cozy up with a good book is with a scent that completes the mood. If you, too, have a soft spot for fragrance candles, here are seven books that will pair perfectly with your signature scent.

Tidelands
by Philippa Gregory

Cinnamon Pumpkin:

If you fall in love with autumnal scents like cinnamon pumpkin, try cozying up with the atmospheric Tidelands by Philippa Gregory. This work of historical fiction, which takes place amid the English civil war in 1648, follows a midwife, Alinor, looking to escape her abusive husband. James, a young man on the run, proves to be her way out. Yet, a woman separated from her husband at the height of witch mania stirs up some dark superstitions in those around her, and her independence and skill with herbs arouse fear in the town. To what lengths will Alinor go to escape conformity, and also prove her innocence?

Tidelands
Philippa Gregory

Midsummer’s Eve, 1648, England is in the grip of a civil war between renegade king and rebellious parliament. The struggle reaches every corner of the kingdom, even the remote tidelands —the marshy landscape of the south coast.

Alinor, a descendant of wisewomen, trapped in poverty and superstition, waits in the graveyard under the full moon for a ghost who will declare her free from her abusive husband. Instead, she meets James, a young man on the run, and shows him the secret ways across the treacherous marsh, not knowing that she is leading disaster into the heart of her life.

Suspected of possessing dark secrets in superstitious times, Alinor’s ambition and determination mark her out from her neighbors. This is the time of witch mania, and Alinor, a woman without a husband, skilled with herbs, suddenly enriched, arouses envy in her rivals and fear among the villagers, who are ready to take lethal action into their own hands.

It is dangerous for a woman to be different.

Soon to be a movie produced by Reese Witherspoon, the novel follows Eleanor, a socially awkward recluse who spends her weekends with frozen pizza and a bottle of vodka.
