5 Books Your Favorite Iconic Saturday Night Live Characters Would Love

by  | June 29
John Mulaney on the SNL stage

If you need a little bit of laughter (and perhaps some more cowbell) right now, there’s no better show for a comedic pick-me-up than Saturday Night Live. Whether you are familiar with the show’s most popular sketches only, or you watch SNL regularly on your phone app (I fall into the latter category), there is no denying that the show has produced some of the most iconic characters in popular culture.

This list is an ode to the bizarre, hilarious, enthusiastic, and overall wonderful SNL characters who have graced our screens over the past forty-five years. I like to imagine that they’re reading these titles in their spare time, when they aren’t at New York’s hottest club or cheerleading at a chess tournament, of course.

Highbrow, Lowbrow, Brilliant, Despicable

Highbrow, Lowbrow, Brilliant, Despicable

by The Editors of New York Magazine

Stefon

Highbrow, Lowbrow, Brilliant, Despicable is ideal for Stefon because this book has got EVERYTHING: behind-the-scenes stories, foldouts, and pages that cover the highlights over the magazine’s fifty-year history. Stefon would love reading about the cultural phenomena and stories that shaped New York’s identity—from Saturday nights at the disco to the launching of Ms. Magazine, and everything in between—while petting his beloved dog, Bark Ruffalo. After finishing the book, Stefon can read The New York Encyclopedia of New York to further expand his knowledge of the best places to go in the city.

The Alien Invasion Survival Handbook

Ms. Rafferty

After having one too many encounters with alien abductions, Ms. Rafferty will want to read The Alien Invasion Survival Handbook. In this guide, the author lays out the most essential strategies for evading a flying saucer and defeating an extraterrestrial in hand-to-hand combat. Hopefully the next time Ms. Rafferty has a close encounter, she can avoid abduction and ending up on the roof of a Long John Silver’s with her slacks in a pine tree.

Sue

Sue loves surprises, and To Have and to Hoax is abundant with twists and turns. Centered upon two estranged lovers, this historical rom-com takes us through the various feigned illnesses and accidents of Lady Violet Grey and Lord James Audley, each trying to outdo the other. The ex-couple’s schemes and manipulations will have Sue throwing her arms in the air, biting pillows, and, potentially, throwing the book out the window due to overexcitement.
