My favorite part of the weekend has always been that magic period on Sunday afternoon, after you’ve brunched and run errands but before the “scaries” of an impending week descend. This also happens to be the #1 best time ever to sit down and watch an action movie or series, since an adventure drama is exciting enough to keep your attention while avoiding the heart-tugging emotions of other genres, which might otherwise derail your nice Sunday-afternoon mood. Lately, I’ve been trying to recreate that Sunday feeling on weekdays—meaning, I’ve raced through all the backlogged episodes of Jack Ryan, my most recent action obsession. So now I’ve needed to find some new high-octane international escapades, filled with deceitful governments, secret agents, and underground factions, all fighting to be the guys walking away from the explosion at the end.

If you’re also looking for your next read to hold you over until Season 3 of Jack Ryan, check out the list below!

The Deserter
by Nelson DeMille

Featuring ripped-from-the-headlines stakes and an exotic, wildly dangerous locale, this thriller opens with reports of the Army’s most lethal military deserter spotted in Caracas, Venezuela. Top Army brass send brilliant but unorthodox investigator Scott Brodie and his new partner, Maggie Taylor, to hunt him down. But the mission hits complications from the moment they land in South America, and the fact that Brodie’s beautiful partner seems to be keeping secrets of her own doesn’t help matters either.…

The Deserter

*NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER*

An “outstanding” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) blistering thriller featuring a brilliant and unorthodox Army investigator, his enigmatic female partner, and their hunt for the Army’s most notorious—and dangerous—deserter from #1 New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille and Alex DeMille.

When Captain Kyle Mercer of the Army’s elite Delta Force disappeared from his post in Afghanistan, a video released by his Taliban captors made international headlines. But circumstances were murky: Did Mercer desert before he was captured? Then a second video sent to Mercer’s Army commanders leaves no doubt: the trained assassin and keeper of classified Army intelligence has willfully disappeared.

When Mercer is spotted a year later in Caracas, Venezuela, by an old Army buddy, top military brass task Scott Brodie and Maggie Taylor of the Criminal Investigation Division to fly to Venezuela and bring Mercer back to America—preferably alive. Brodie knows this is a difficult mission, made more difficult by his new partner’s inexperience, by their undeniable chemistry, and by Brodie’s suspicion that Maggie Taylor is reporting to the CIA.

With ripped-from-the-headlines appeal, an exotic and dangerous locale, and the hairpin twists and inimitable humor that are signature DeMille, The Deserter is the first in a timely and thrilling new series from an unbeatable team of True Masters: the #1 New York Times bestseller Nelson DeMille and his son, award-winning screenwriter Alex DeMille.

Vince Flynn

An unprecedented and terrifying bioterrorism plot threatens to kill millions in the midst of a divisive presidential election in this new thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling Mitch Rapp series.

A toxic presidential election is underway in an America already badly weakened by internal divisions. While politicians focus entirely on maintaining their own power and privilege, ISIS kidnaps a brilliant French microbiologist and forces him to begin manufacturing anthrax. Slickly produced videos chronicling his progress and threatening an imminent attack are posted to the Internet, intensifying the hysteria gripping the US.

ISIS recruits a Mexican drug cartel to smuggle the bioweapon across the border, but it’s really just a diversion. The terrorist organization needs to keep Mitch Rapp and Irene Kennedy distracted long enough to weaponize a deadly virus that they stumbled upon in Yemen. If they succeed, they’ll trigger a pandemic that could rewrite the world order.

Rapp embarks on a mission to infiltrate the Mexican cartels and track down the ISIS leader who he failed to kill during their last confrontation. But with Washington’s political elite increasingly lined up against him, he knows he’ll be on his own.

“In the world of black-ops thrillers, Mitch Rapp remains the gold standard” (Booklist, starred review).

Red Sparrow
by Jason Matthews

In this thrilling look at spy games and international intelligence, a CIA field operative is charged with protecting his source, a mole placed high up in Putin’s administration. Meanwhile a young ballerina survives in modern-day Russia after training as a seductress, whose next mark puts her on a collision course with the CIA. Rocketing through Russia, Finland, Greece, Italy, and the United States, the two agents engage in dueling tradecraft and secret allegiances, and—most critically—a forbidden passion for each other, which could cost them both everything.
