11 Must-Read Celebrity Books Releasing This Fall

by  | October 1

Our favorite celebrities entertain, educate, and inspire us in various ways every day. Who would we even be without Queer Eye’s Fab Five to make us question our sartorial choices; Mo Rocca and Elvis Duran to distract us from our hellish commutes; and Jenna Dewan to ruin us for all other lip sync battles? It doesn’t bear thinking about. Lucky for us, they have anticipated our needs and created these things called books, which will allow us to take our obsession with their work to the next level. So the next time you find yourself endlessly scrolling through your news feed, put down your phone and pick up one of these 11 must-read celebrity books publishing this fall.

Mobituaries (Audio)

Mobituaries (Audio)

by Mo Rocca

Stephen’s Pick...

Mo Rocca has been one of my favorite comedians since his days as a correspondent on The Daily Show, where he blended journalistic chops with a satirical sensibility to bring new, tongue-in-cheek perspectives to the issues of the day. When he launched the “Mobituaries” podcast—a show that revisits overlooked, underappreciated people from history—earlier this year, it was the reminder the world needed that he’s still the hardest-working reporter with the sharpest wit. Mobituaries: Great Lives Worth Reliving brings it all full circle with Mo packing lots of humor, heart, and history into a compulsively readable book that celebrates and memorializes the likes of Thomas Paine, the demise of disco, pioneering actress Fanny Brice, dragons, the station wagon, a long line of presidential candidates, and much, much more.

The Book of Gutsy Women

The Book of Gutsy Women

by Hillary Rodham Clinton

Leora’s Pick...

Hillary’s spunk and ferocity have inspired me my whole life. I am a stronger woman because people like HRC and Chelsea exist. Hillary’s determination to be a Woman who Does Things and Makes Things Happen and Chelsea’s ability to do the same thing with unmatched grace have reminded me that it’s not wrong to be opinionated and a little brash and maybe a little stubborn. That intelligence, competence, and work ethic are key, regardless of your gender. So when it was announced that they were writing a book about amazing women who inspired them, I knew this was a book for me, for my nieces, for my sister, my mother, and for, to borrow a Hillary quote, “all the little girls…never doubt that you are valuable and powerful.” These are women who were born into this world to inspire. I’m lucky enough to work at the publishing house where we can spread their inspiration, and you can bet your bottom dollar that I will absolutely be buying multiple copies of this book on day one.

Where Do I Begin?

Where Do I Begin?

by Elvis Duran

Sara’s Pick #1...

I have been starting my days with Elvis Duran’s morning show for over a decade now, since I was in middle school, and I am far from the only one. Duran has worked at New York’s Z100 station since 1996, and still has that same outrageous sense of fun that keeps him and the rest of his radio crew in stitches. This new memoir looks back at how this DJ got his start working in radio, becoming famous for his proactive and incisive interviews with celebrities, and how throughout it all, he’s tried to advocate for positivity in every aspect of his career. A must-read for anyone who grew up listening to Elvis or just looking for the kind of joyous, bright memoir that makes you appreciate the voices from your car radio a little bit more.

Idiot

Idiot

by Laura Clery

Anne’s Pick...

If you’re a fan of Laura Clery’s disgusting iconic Facebook show, Help Helen Smash, you’re going to be blown away by her memoir, Idiot. Heck, even if you don’t know Laura Clery at all, you’ll love it! This is one of the most refreshing, raw, and real memoirs I’ve ever read! You’re in for laugh-out-loud stories about shoplifting lipstick with her high school bestie; pooping in hot tubs; and introducing herself to her future roommates by way of a Christina Aguilera impression. But Laura’s story definitely isn’t all fun and games—she takes readers along on her sometimes self-destructive path to fame and her journey from being a “narcissistic coke-head” to a yoga-doing, dog-adopting, talented…IDIOT!

Embrace Your Weird

Embrace Your Weird

by Felicia Day

Nicole’s Pick #1...

You’d be hard-pressed to find a self-identified geek who hasn’t heard of Felicia Day. From starring on Buffy, Eureka, and The Magicians to voicing some of the most iconic video game characters to diving deep into the world of Dungeons and Dragons, Felicia has been a mainstay in geek culture. She’s incredibly vocal about how proud she is to be a female geek in an industry that is so heavily saturated by men—and that is a message that has resonated with her countless fans. In her first book, the memoir You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost), she detailed her upbringing, how she rose to Internet stardom, and began the conversation around embracing her weird. Now, she’s back with a book that focuses on just that! Embrace Your Weird takes readers on a journey to find and ignite their creative passions, no matter how “weird” they are. I’m so excited to read Felicia’s newest words of wisdom and get in touch with the beauty of what makes us all weird.

Gracefully You

Gracefully You

by Jenna Dewan

Saimah’s Pick #1...

The first time I saw Jenna Dewan on-screen was in her breakout role in Step Up. After that movie, she landed a whole bunch of other TV roles from Supergirl to The Resident, and my personal favorite…Lip Sync Battle. I loved following her on social to find out what she was up to behind the scenes of her many projects, so when I heard she was writing a book, I knew I had to get my hands on it. Gracefully You will be a lifestyle book mixed with Jenna’s personal stories of how she’s raising her adorable little girl, Everly—who will soon be a big sister to Jenna’s baby with her new boyfriend, Steve Kazee.

Dear Girls

Dear Girls

by Ali Wong

Allie’s Pick...

You may know Ali Wong as the brilliant stand-up comedian behind the smash hit Netflix specials, “Baby Cobra” and “Hard Knock Wife,” both of which she famously filmed while pregnant. In her debut book, Dear Girls, Ali has knocked it out of the park once again with this fearless, honest, hilarious collection of letters to her two daughters.

Over the Top

Over the Top

by Jonathan Van Ness

Saimah’s Pick #2...

There is no doubt in anybody’s mind about who is the most vocal of the Fab Five. Jonathan Van Ness (JVN) is definitely a fan favorite on the show (tbh, they all are amazing, but there’s just no contest). In the latest season of Queer Eye, the guys stopped by his hometown and we got to see where he grew up, the high school he attended, and the theater teacher who helped him survive high school—an episode that required tissues for many fans. If you can’t get enough of JVN’s story, you won’t want to miss his new memoir, Over the Top. The contents of the book have been mostly under wraps until this week. His optimism on the show never wavers, but in his memoir he shares some of the trauma he experienced growing up. Some heroes wear capes, and others wear stilettos and crop tops....

Antoni in the Kitchen

Antoni in the Kitchen

by Antoni Porowski

Sienna’s Pick...

I am a huge Queer Eye fan and I love all the cast members, but Antoni is always the one who I feel is the weakest link. Really, Antoni, you are a chef, but you are going to teach someone how to make avocado toast? So I am pleasantly surprised to see that the recipes in his cookbook look delicious—such as a poutine of tater tots. The cookbook is also part memoir, so you learn all about his trajectory to Queer Eye star. He may not be the best chef in the world, but he is definitely easy on the eye, and there are a lot of pictures of Antoni in this book, if you would like some eye candy while you are slaving away in your kitchen.

Rachael Ray 50

Rachael Ray 50

by Rachael Ray

Sara’s Pick #2...

If you’ve ever even perused TV, you’ve seen Rachael Ray. From chef to travel host to talk show queen, she’s been helping viewers prep fast and delicious meals, or eat in amazing cities on the cheap, for a long time now. As she approaches her 50th birthday, she reflects back on her life and career in the only way we’d expect her to: in a recipe book. She lets readers in on her family life, life-changing run-ins with muggers, and all the many jobs she’s had, all while sharing 125 different recipes, from the simple to the exquisite, bound to delight super fans and wannabe cooks alike. And did I mention the gorgeous food photography? So you’ve got a memoir, cookbook, and coffee table stunner all in one book—and I wouldn’t (nor should you) expect anything less from Rachael Ray.

High School

High School

by Tegan Quin + Sara Quin

Nicole's Pick #2...

“All I wanna get is a little bit closer” to the Tegan and Sara origin story and luckily, we can all now do just that thanks to their debut memoir, High School. The sisters’ gift for storytelling is apparent in their lyrics and also in their concert banter between songs, so it makes sense their next adventure would be writing a memoir. They wrote alternating chapters to showcase their unique voices and experiences. In their book’s press release they write, “How did you start your band? When did you know that you were gay? What were you like before Tegan and Sara? We have spent 20 years answering those complicated questions with simple answers. Writing High School gives us the opportunity to tell the intricate stories that shaped our relationship as sisters, musicians, and queer girls.”
