3 Perfect Reads for Fans of Nine Perfect Strangers

In Nine Perfect Strangers, nine people (hence the title) have all decided to go to a retreat at Tranquillum House. It’s a health resort in the middle of nowhere with individualized treatments designed exactly for each guest. Some of the guests want to lose weight, some want to work on mindfulness, and some you aren’t sure why they are there. The owner of the resort, Masha,

 promises that the life of everyone who attends will be transformed in ten days. I can’t tell you much more without giving the story away, but if you like novels with the narrative told by multiple characters, enigmatic, guru-like leaders, and a locked-room-esque setting, then you should read this one and the others like it on this list!

The book by Liane Moriarity is being adapted by Hulu and is slated to premiere in late 2020, starring Kate McKinnon! Nicole Kidman (who currently stars in Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies) will be producing the Nine Perfect Strangers adaptation.

Alice and Daphne are both obsessed with losing weight, but with different motivations for doing so. Daphne comes from a family of thin women and, as the plump daughter, longs to gain her mother’s approval. Alice was skinny when she met her husband, and now she’s worried she may lose him if she gains any additional weight. The two enter a program called “Waisted,” in an isolated mansion in Vermont. The program promises quick and dramatic results, so Alice, Daphne, and five other woman have joined in exchange for agreeing to participate in a film, called Waisted the Documentary, that will be shared afterward. The women soon realize that they are part of a horrible experiment—and the more they lose weight, the more upset and unhinged they become.

Mitchell Inn is a remote and romantic lodge in upstate New York that seemed like the ultimate escape from city life for their guests, until some of them end up murdered. The power goes out during an intense blizzard, but the inn is fully stocked with supplies to get them through the worst of it, so the guests aren’t too concerned. When the first body turns up, everyone thinks it’s a horrible accident. But when the second person turns up dead, the guests start to freak-out. And then the third body is found. Okay, get me out of here. Okay, knowing me, I would have been gone after the first dead guest. But anyway, who is killing all of them??? They can’t leave, there’s no cell service, and there’s no way to get in touch with the police until the storm is over.
