Treat Yourself to These 5 Sweet Reads on #NationalCandyDay

by  | November 4

I love candy—chocolate-covered pretzels, sour candies, chocolate peanut butter cups, you name it. So obviously #NationalCandyDay is my new favorite holiday. But clearly, I need something just as delicious to go along with these delectable treats. What better pairing than books and candy? Here are my picks for what to read based on the whims of my sweet tooth.

The Twisted Ones

The Twisted Ones

by T. Kingfisher

Chocolate-Covered Pretzels

Basically, I’ll talk about this book to anyone who’ll listen, and as the title suggests, it’s a bit of a twisted tale. It follows Mouse, along with her lovable dog, Bongo, as she ventures to rural North Carolina to clean out her deceased pack-rat grandmother’s home. While there, Mouse stumbles upon her step-grandfather’s journal, which seems to be filled with the ramblings of a madman—until Mouse starts to see some of the same things he described. The Twisted Ones is dark and haunting with fantastic elements of folk horror woven through it. Much like when I open a bag of chocolate-covered pretzels, which have an addictive quality of their own, once I started reading this book I had to devour all of it.

I'm Thinking of Ending Things

I'm Thinking of Ending Things

Sour Gummies

This book is tart in the most enticing and addicting way, as are sour gummies. It’s a bit of a slow burn, but once that taste hits your tongue, it explodes. I’m Thinking of Ending Things is a dark thriller that follows Jake and his girlfriend on a trip to his parents’ farm. What ensues is an intense plunge into the human psyche and the reality of relationships that keeps unfolding right until the very last word. And just like my favorite sour candies, this book will stay with you long after you’ve finished reading it.

Twice in a Blue Moon

Twice in a Blue Moon

Hard Candies

They can be hard on your teeth at times, but the flavor lasts forever and I can’t seem to get enough of them, just like Twice in a Blue Moon by Christina Lauren. The story follows Tate, a young actress who, while on the set of her first big break, is forced to confront Sam, the man who betrayed her and broke her heart 14 years earlier. This is a consuming, long-lasting second-chance romance that you’ll want to sink your teeth into right away.

Ninth House

Ninth House

by Leigh Bardugo

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

Chocolate on the outside and filled with amazing peanut butter goodness on the inside, chocolate peanut butter cups are a multilayered treat just like Leigh Bardugo’s Ninth House. In this fantasy novel with mystery elements, Alex Stern, high school dropout and sole survivor of a horrific homicide, receives an unexpected full ride to Yale. This opportunity to start fresh seems too good to be true, because it is. Now in New Haven, Alex is tasked with monitoring the occult activities of Yale’s secret societies.

The Light Over London

The Light Over London

Caramels

Caramels are a seemingly simple candy yet they have a lot of depth. For me, they also conjure up feelings of nostalgia. Perhaps because I would always dig through my mother’s purse looking for one, or because they always seem to turn up when you need one. Just like the diary that Cara, an antiques dealer, discovers while helping her boss clear out an estate in The Light Over London. As it turns out, the journal belongs to 19-year-old Louise Keene, a gunner girl in World War II who wrote about her romance with RAF pilot Paul Bolton and her work with the anti-aircraft gun unit of the women’s auxiliary branch of the British Army. This captivating novel follows—and alternates chapters between—Cara’s sleuthing in the present day and Louise’s courageous and heart-wrenching historical story.
